This comprehensive guide covers all aspects of creating and editing recipes in Recipe Kit.

Quick Start: Your First Recipe

New to Recipe Kit? Follow these steps to create your first recipe in minutes:

1. Open the Recipe Editor

  1. Open Recipe Kit from Shopify admin
  2. Click Recipes in the navigation
  3. Click Create Recipe

2. Add Basic Information

  • Title - Clear, descriptive name (e.g., "Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies")
  • Description - 2-3 appetizing sentences
  • Image - Upload a high-quality photo of the finished dish

3. Add Times and Servings

  • Prep Time - Time to prepare ingredients
  • Cook Time - Active cooking/baking time
  • Servings - Number of portions

4. Add Ingredients

For each ingredient, enter:

  1. Amount (e.g., "2")
  2. Unit (e.g., "cups")
  3. Ingredient name (e.g., "all-purpose flour")
  4. Optional preparation notes (e.g., "sifted")

Tip: Click the product icon to link ingredients to products for Add to Cart functionality.

5. Add Directions

  1. Click Add Step
  2. Write clear, concise instructions starting with a verb
  3. Repeat for each step

6. Save and Publish

  1. Click Save (saves as Hidden/draft by default)
  2. Change status to Published when ready
  3. Preview to see how your recipe card looks

Accessing the Recipe Editor

Create a New Recipe

  1. Open Recipe Kit from Shopify admin
  2. Click Recipes in the navigation
  3. Click Create Recipe

Edit an Existing Recipe

  1. Go to Recipes
  2. Find your recipe in the list
  3. Click on it to open the editor

Recipe Fields Overview

Essential Fields

Field Description
Title Recipe name, used for SEO
Description Appetizing summary
Image Main recipe photo (JPEG, PNG, WebP)
Ingredients List of ingredients
Directions Step-by-step instructions

Timing Fields

Field Description
Prep Time Time to prepare (minutes or hours)
Cook Time Active cooking time
Servings Number of portions

Note: Total time is automatically calculated from prep time + cook time when displayed.

Optional Fields

Field Description
Author Recipe creator's name
Cuisine Type of cuisine (American, Italian, etc.)
Equipment Required kitchen tools
Nutrition Nutritional information per serving
Tags Keywords and dietary labels
Notes Tips, variations, storage info
Video Embedded video URL
Custom Fields Add your own fields (e.g., Difficulty, Source)

Writing Great Recipe Content

Titles

  • Be specific: "Creamy Garlic Tuscan Salmon" not "Fish Recipe"
  • Include main ingredients or cuisine type
  • Keep titles concise for best SEO results

Descriptions

  • 2-3 appetizing sentences
  • Describe taste, texture, and occasion
  • Example: "This creamy garlic salmon comes together in just 20 minutes for an impressive weeknight dinner. Tender salmon fillets in a rich sun-dried tomato cream sauce that's absolutely irresistible."

Directions

  • One action per step
  • Start with a verb (Preheat, Mix, Pour)
  • Include temperatures and times
  • Keep steps concise but complete

Saving and Publishing

Recipe Status

Recipes have three statuses:

Status Description
Published Visible on your store
Hidden Saved but not displayed (draft)
Disabled Completely hidden

Auto-Save

Recipe Kit saves your work automatically as you type, so you won't lose changes.

Recommended Workflow

  1. Create recipe as Hidden (draft)
  2. Complete all fields
  3. Link to products and blog posts
  4. Preview the recipe card
  5. Change to Published when ready

Bulk Actions

From the Recipes list, you can:

  • Select multiple recipes using checkboxes
  • Change status in bulk
  • Delete multiple recipes

Duplicating Recipes

To copy an existing recipe:

  1. Open the recipe
  2. Click the menu (three dots)
  3. Select Duplicate
  4. Edit the copy as needed

Deleting Recipes

To delete a recipe:

  1. Open the recipe
  2. Click the menu (three dots)
  3. Select Delete
  4. Confirm deletion

Note: Deleting removes the recipe permanently and unlinks it from any connected products or blog posts.
