Linking blog posts to recipes

Connecting a recipe to a Shopify blog post makes the recipe card appear on that post automatically. The post carries your story, and the card carries the recipe and the structured data Google reads.

Connecting recipes to blog posts is free on every plan.

Connect a recipe to a blog post

1. Open the recipe in Recipe Kit.
2. Find the Connect to a blog post card. It shows a Not connected badge while the recipe has no post.
3. Click Select blog post.
4. In the Select your blog post window, type in the search box to find the post. Posts from all your blogs are listed, each with a badge naming its blog.
5. Click the post.

On a recipe you have already saved, the connection saves straight away. If the recipe's title, author or description is empty, Recipe Kit fills it in from the post.

On a new recipe started with Write it yourself, Import a recipe or Draft it with AI, the card is called Blog post. Choose Use a post I've already written to open the same window.

Each recipe connects to one blog post, and each post holds one recipe. A post already used by another recipe is greyed out with the message "Already used by" and that recipe's name. Remove it from that recipe first.

Create the blog post from the recipe

A new recipe makes its own blog post, so you do not have to write the post first.

1. Open Recipe Kit, click New recipe and choose Write it yourself, Import a recipe or Draft it with AI.
2. Fill in the recipe. In the Blog post card, leave Create a new blog post selected.
3. To give the post its own title, content, excerpt, image, author, tags or theme template, click Edit blog post or the Blog post tab. Anything you leave blank uses the recipe's title, description and image.
4. Click Create.

The post goes in the blog picked on the Blog post tab, or else your Default Recipe Blog. A Published recipe publishes it, and a Hidden recipe keeps it hidden. From then on it is an ordinary Shopify post. To change it, open the recipe and click Edit post in Shopify in the Connect to a blog post card. A recipe you saved without a post can get one too. Click Select blog post, then Create new in the window. Enter a Blog post title, pick the Blog, choose Visible or Hidden and click Create blog post. Recipe Kit makes an empty post with that title and connects it. Add the post's text in Shopify.

Show the card on your blog posts

The connection tells Recipe Kit which recipe belongs on a post. Your blog post template also needs the Recipe Kit app block, added once in the theme editor. Installation guide has the steps. On blog posts, leave the block's Recipe ID empty so it uses the connection.

If your theme puts the card in its own section away from the post text, switch on Embed inside article content:

1. Open Recipe Kit and go to Settings.
2. Click Advanced to expand it.
3. Under Widget Features, switch on Embed inside article content.
4. Click Save.

Set the default blog and template

Two settings in the Advanced section of Settings control new posts:

Sync recipe details to the post

Two checkboxes in the recipe editor copy recipe details to the connected post when you save. Both are on by default.

You can set both for many recipes at once with the update_blog_post_tags and update_blog_post_image columns in a CSV import. See Bulk recipe import and export.

Change or remove the connection

1. Open the recipe in Recipe Kit.
2. In the Connect to a blog post card, click Change blog post to pick another post, or Remove connection to disconnect it.

The card also has Edit post in Shopify, which opens the post itself in Shopify. Recipe Kit does not edit the post's text, title or SEO, so change those there.

If the post was deleted in Shopify, the card shows Blog post connection broken. Click Reconnect to a different post to pick a new one, or Remove connection.

Open the recipe from a Shopify blog post

You can jump from a blog post in Shopify straight to its recipe:

1. In Shopify admin, open the blog post.
2. Click More actions.
3. Click Create/Edit Recipe.

Recipe Kit opens the recipe connected to that post. If the post has no recipe yet, Recipe Kit opens a new recipe already connected to the post, with the title, author and description filled in from it. Fill in the rest and click Create.

Two ways to work

Recipe first. Click New recipe and start with Write it yourself, Import a recipe or Draft it with AI. Write the post's title and intro on the Blog post tab, or leave it to follow the recipe, and click Create. Recipe Kit makes the post. Good when the recipe is the point.

Post first. Write the blog post in Shopify. Then click Add to a post you've already written on the New recipe page, or Create/Edit Recipe on the post itself, and create the recipe on that post. Good when the story is the point and the recipe supports it.

Troubleshooting

No card on the post

1. Check the recipe's visibility is Published.
2. Check the Connect to a blog post card shows the right post.
3. Check the Recipe Kit block is on the template that post uses.

The wrong recipe shows

Open the recipe that should show and connect it to the post. If the block on that template has a Recipe ID set, it shows that recipe on every post, so clear the Recipe ID on blog post templates.
