Recipe FAQs

Add the questions customers ask about a recipe, with your answers, and they appear on the recipe card under the recipe. Recipe Kit also publishes them as FAQPage structured data, so search engines and AI assistants can read them when someone asks about your dish.

Recipe FAQs are part of the Growth plan. You can compare plans on the Recipe Kit listing in the Shopify App Store.

Add FAQs to a recipe

  1. Open the recipe in Recipe Kit.
  2. Scroll down to Frequently asked questions, below Notes.
  3. Select Add question.
  4. Type the question in Question and your reply in Answer.
  5. Repeat for each question, then select Save.

The Frequently asked questions section in the recipe editor, with three questions filled in

Each recipe holds up to 20 questions. A question can be up to 300 characters and an answer up to 1,200. The counter beside each field shows how many you've used and turns red when you go over.

A question is one line. You can make words bold, italic or underlined, or add a link. An answer can also run to several paragraphs and include bulleted or numbered lists. Links in FAQs open in a new tab.

Use the arrows on each question to change the order, and the trash icon to remove one. The order in the editor is the order on your storefront.

If a question has no answer when you save, or an answer has no question, Recipe Kit leaves that row out.

How FAQs look on your storefront

The questions appear as a numbered list headed Frequently Asked Questions, below the recipe notes. Every answer is shown in full, with nothing to click open. Recipes with no FAQs don't show the section at all.

FAQs work in every recipe card design. To see how they look in yours, open Settings and check the Live Preview. Its sample recipe has three questions.

The Frequently Asked Questions section on a recipe card

A few things to know:

  • FAQs are hidden in Cook Mode, along with the notes and video. See Cook Mode.
  • The heading has its own link. Add #rk-faqs to the end of a blog post's address to send someone straight to the questions.
  • FAQs show only on the new Recipe Kit widget. The original recipekit.liquid snippet doesn't show them. If Recipe Kit can't find the new widget on your theme, the editor shows a yellow notice above your questions (see Troubleshooting below).

Search engines and AI assistants

With each recipe that has FAQs, Recipe Kit adds a FAQPage block to the page's structured data, next to the Recipe block. Each question and answer becomes one entry, in the same order as the editor. Bold, links and lists are removed there, so the entry is plain text.

The block is written into the page's HTML, so crawlers that don't run JavaScript, including the ones AI assistants use, can read the questions and answers. On stores with translations turned on, the widget adds the block once the page loads instead.

A recipe with no FAQs adds no FAQPage block.

FAQs also count toward the recipe's SEO Score. The Answer Engine part of the score is full at three questions, and one or two earn part of it.

Add FAQs with a CSV import

Recipe Kit's CSV import and export include a faqs column, so you can add questions to many recipes at once. Go to Tools and choose CSV export to get a file with your current FAQs, or CSV import to load one.

Write each question and answer as question||answer, and separate pairs with a semicolon:

Can I freeze the dough?||Yes. Freeze it in balls for up to 3 months.;Why did my cookies spread?||The butter was too warm. Chill the dough for 30 minutes.

  • If a question or answer contains a semicolon, type it as \;. Exports do this for you.
  • Don't use || inside a question. It is fine inside an answer.
  • The same limits apply: 20 questions per recipe, and anything over the character limits is shortened.
  • An empty faqs cell leaves a recipe's FAQs as they are. To remove FAQs, delete them in the recipe editor.
  • On a plan without FAQs, the column is ignored when you import.

The other columns are covered in Bulk Recipe Import / Export.

Translations

If you've turned on translations, a recipe's FAQs are translated with the rest of the recipe in Shopify's Translate & Adapt app. The Frequently Asked Questions heading is translated there too, under Recipe Kit Labels, in the FAQs field. See Translating Recipes with Translate and Adapt.

Tips for good questions

  • Answer what people email you about. Substitutions, storage and make-ahead come up for nearly every dish. "Can I use frozen blueberries?", "How long does this sauce keep in the fridge?" and "Can I make the dough the night before?" are all good questions.
  • Put the answer first. Start with "Yes", "No" or the number, then explain. "Yes. Assemble it up to a day ahead and bake it straight from the fridge, adding 5 minutes."
  • Make each answer stand on its own. An assistant may quote one answer without the rest of the page, so "Yes, up to 3 months in the freezer" works better than "See step 4."
  • Mention your products where they fit. "Which chili crisp should I use?" is a fair question on a recipe built around the one you sell.
  • Skip what the recipe already says. If the bake time is in the directions, a question asking for it adds nothing.

Troubleshooting

The section shows an example and an Upgrade button. Your plan doesn't include FAQs. They are on the Growth plan.

My FAQs still show on my store, but I can't edit them. FAQs you added stay live on your storefront and keep their structured data if you change plans. Editing them needs the Growth plan.

A question disappeared after I saved. It had no answer, or the answer had no question. Add both halves and save again.

My answer was cut short. It went over the character limit. Long text is shortened to the limit and loses its formatting. Keep an eye on the counter and split a long answer into two questions.

A notice says FAQs only render on the new Recipe Kit widget. Recipe Kit didn't find the new widget on your theme. Select Install new widget to add it, or Re-check if you just did. If you know it's installed, select I already have the new widget installed. See Upgrading to New Recipe Kit Widget.
