Recipe Kit image size guide

Recipe Kit image size guide

If you have uploaded a recipe image and only part of it shows on the card, that is the crop at work, not a bug. This guide covers what to upload so the whole photo displays.

Why part of your image is hidden

The recipe card crops your image to fill a fixed frame rather than shrinking it to fit. A tall or square photo gets trimmed on the top and bottom, so only the middle strip shows.

The crop is anchored to the center of the image. Whatever is in the middle of your photo is what survives.

Upload this

1200 x 800 pixels, landscape (3:2 ratio).

All four card designs use a 3:2 frame, so one image size works no matter which design you pick:

Design Image frame Tallest it displays
Classic 3:2 landscape 500px tall
Compact 3:2 landscape 500px tall
Card 3:2 landscape 400px tall
Card Vertical 3:2 landscape 450px tall

Larger than 1200 x 800 is fine, it is just more than the card needs. Smaller than about 1000px wide starts to look soft on high resolution screens.

Recipe Kit does not pin the card to an exact pixel width, because the card scales to whatever width your theme gives the blog post. Some themes give it 800px, others 1200px. Matching the 3:2 ratio is what matters, not hitting an exact pixel count.

Center the dish

Because the crop works outward from the center, framing decides what you keep. Put the dish in the middle of the shot and leave the empty space around the edges. If your photo has the food off to one side, crop it yourself before uploading rather than letting the card do it.

Keep the file small

The card loads your image at full resolution. A 5MB photo will slow the page down for every visitor.

Export as JPEG or WebP at around quality 80 and aim for under 1MB. Tools like TinyPNG or Squoosh will get you there with no visible loss. The upload limit is 10MB, but you should not need anywhere near that.

Supported formats

JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, and HEIC.

Quick checklist

  1. Crop to 3:2, landscape
  2. Export at 1200 x 800 or larger
  3. Center the dish in the frame
  4. Compress to under 1MB
  5. Upload and check the card on both desktop and mobile
